Here is the follow up to part one of the “Good Journey” fan comic I reviewed recently. Assad Shamsi’s fan comic series is set in the world of the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. The comic is illustrated by Emily Stewart, and it’s available for free in its entirety here.
The first comic was called “Forewarning,” and it was set not too long after the defeat of Skeletor at the end of the original 1987 Masters of the Universe movie. At the end of that story was a cliffhanger. He-Man and Gwildor had set off in search of the missing Cosmic Key. They landed in a desert cave and came upon Tri-Klops, who had grabbed Gwildor by the throat. In part two, called “The Calm,” we see He-Man engaged in a sword fight with Tri-Klops:
After a battle, He-Man compels Tri-Klops to tell him where the key is. He complies, but the key turns out to be a fake! At this point some new villains enter the story, in a scene I won’t spoil for you. The story is short but charming, and well worth the read!
Assad’s next story is called “Blade of Contention.” This one is illustrated in a very different art style by Pietro Carretta and Fabio Pavanini. In this story the 1987 movie version of He-Man (albeit with a Filmation-esque face) awakes in a prison cell. He finds himself in a Roman-style gladiatorial arena, being forced to fight for the amusement of the crowd. It turns out that his opponent is a cyborg version of Blade!
He-Man is expected to fight for to the death. However, when He-Man has a chance to finish of Blade, he refuses, and turns Blade into his ally! That is of course a very classic He-Man move.
Both “Good Journey Part 2” and “Blade of Contention” are quick reads that keep to the spirit of classic Masters of the Universe mini comics in both writing and art style. And the best part is they are available to read for free!
