Masters of the Universe Cross Sell Art: 1987

Written by Adam McCombs

The artwork for this set comes from Axel Giménez, Jukka Issakainen, The Art of He-Man, MOTU Portugal, and StarCrusader. Unfortunately I don’t have a real piece of cross sell artwork for Twistoid – the artwork used here comes from the card front.

  1. OK, here’s a question…why does the cross sell artwork for the Tower Tools (dumb name), Cliff Climber (also a dumb name) and Subattack (awesome name) show He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Skeletor, respectively? Weren’t those three figures disconnected by 1987? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to show more recent figures (maybe from 1985 or 1986) instead of characters from 1982/1983?

    1. Yeah, that’s a good question. Those accessories might not have worked with the most recent He-Man and Skeletor variants (Flying Fists/Terror Claws) because they had sculpted armor on them. But, you’d think they could have used someone like Clamp Champ for one of these.

    2. If I recall the Mattel 1987 dealer’s catalog correctly, those three were still in circulation.

      1. Hmmm. That’s interesting. I wasn’t really aware that the early characters like Man-At-Arms were still being sold then. I pretty much checked out of MOTU around early 1987. The last two figures I remember buying were Stonedar and Rokkon, on clearance, and maybe a few POP figures also on clearance.

  2. I was a little disappointed that the otherwise fine book The Art of He-Man didn’t include all of these. A complete vintage Masters of the Universe box art book would be a dream come true !

  3. So many MOTU things I didn’t even know existed! As a child I had a poster which I loved (it must have come with a figure or playset) and it had loads of figures on it. Stinkor was in the top right and I think Moss-Man was top left. Anyway, I thought for years that poster detailed everything available. It was only when I got back into MOTU as an adult that I realised I was wrong. But even so, I’ve never seen some of these things before – that Scubattack, for example! I obviously need to do more revision…
